Final Set: Thomas Edison Tennis Player Journey
You don't have to be a tennis enthusiast to appreciate the difficulty of the professional game, as well as the players that fade into obscurity or are pushed out due to injury. Final Set brings to life the unglamorous and emotional rollercoaster aspect of the sport rarely seen on film.
Alex Lutz portrays the struggles of retired tennis star Thomas Edison, who is auditioning for the French Open at the age of 37. Lutz has a striking resemblance to Stefan Edberg, a Swedish footballer. Since Edison's quarter-final collapse in 2001, he has received only intermittent invites to games around Europe.

Thomas works as a tennis instructor at his mother Judith's club in between matches. It's the same club where Thomas used to practice as a kid and showed signs of being a world champion.
Thomas pushes a talented youngster's parents to push him to the next level. On the other hand, Judith believes that the guilt of thrusting Thomas into the spotlight before he was emotionally ready still exists today.

Movie Review: FINAL SET (2021) - With multiple knee surgeries behind him, a thirty-something French tennis player ranked 245 (played by Alex Lutz) battles the red clay of Roland Garros to make a run at French Open glory in Quentin Reynaud's new film.

Edison utilizes public transportation to and from games and does not receive sponsorship money. He glances up to catch the gaze of his much younger opponent Damien Thosso in a promotional life-size cardboard cutout while shopping for his gear in the sports store.
A chance to play in the Open as a wild card is stolen away, and Thomas' challenging qualification rounds to reach the final draw begins. He only makes it through the first three rounds, bleeding, blistered, and tired, thanks to the audience yelling his name and Eve's delightful grin from the stands.

Is Final Set A Real Story?
The director of Final Set, Quentin, didn't precisely project himself into the role of Thomas, but he did give him his passion for tennis, the strength of character, and spiritual brilliance. THE FINAL SET is based on a real story.

While the film's climax may be sudden, it is to its credit that it avoids the crowd-pleasing comeback stories that have been popular in the past. The film's heart is off the court, despite the brilliance of the on-court action.
There are several particularly touching and emotionally intense scenes between Thomas and his wife and mother, which give his matches a stronger sense of purpose and meaning for the future.
