Derek Stingley Jr. is linked to Darryl Floyd Stingle, Derek's grandpa. Darryl was an American wide receiver whose career was cut short at age 26 due to an on-field spinal cord injury.

Darryl died of heart illness and pneumonia worsened by quadriplegia after a five-year career with the New England Patriots of the National Football League.

In 60 regular-season games for the Patriots, Darryl has 110 catches for 1,883 yards and 14 touchdowns. Darryl also ran for 244 yards and two touchdowns on 28 rushes, returned 19 punts for 136 yards and returned eight kickoffs for 187 yards.

In 1973 and 1975, Stingley had over 500 combined yards running, receiving, and punt and kickoff return. Stingley had 2,450 total yards running, welcoming, and returning punts and kickoffs towards the end of his career.

In a 42–3 triumph over the Baltimore Colts on October 6, 1974, Stingley rushed for a 23-yard touchdown.

On September 18, 1977, his 26th birthday, Darryl rushed for a 34-yard score and grabbed a 21-yard touchdown throw in their 21–17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Darryl is one of just three Patriots players to grab a touchdown pass on his birthday, and he's the only wide receiver to score both on the ground and in the air.
