The horse was the biggest long-shot in the 20-horse field, with odds of 80-1.

Rich Strike started the derby week as an alternative and was only promoted to the competition on Friday after another horse dropped out.

Rich Strike was in the middle of the pack as the horses neared the final stretch, but in the final seconds of the race, he stormed past front-runners and betting favorites Epicenter and Zandon.

Sonny Leon is not listed on the Wikipedia official page. Sonny had a remarkable debut in the Kentucky Derby by leading Rich Strike to an 80-1 upset victory in the 2022 race for the roses.

Leon began his career in 2015 and has amassed around 800 victories on smaller racing tracks.
