Is Samuel Alito Catholic?

Samuel Alito was the Supreme Court's 110th justice, the second Italian-American, the 11th Catholic in its history, and the Court's fifth Catholic when he was appointed.

Because Samuel joined the Court in the middle of the term, he did not participate in the judgments of most of the Court's early cases because he had not heard arguments for them.

An 8-member Court issued these decisions; none were 4–4; hence, Samuel would not have been the decisive vote if Alito had participated.

On May 1, 2006, Samuel issued his first written opinion in Holmes v. South Carolina, a case addressing criminal defendants' right to introduce evidence that a third party committed the crime.

He wrote for a unanimous court in ordering a new trial for Bobby Lee Holmes owing to a regulation in South Carolina that prohibited such evidence based on the strength of the prosecution's case rather than the relevance and strength of the defense evidence itself.

During his first term, Samuel also wrote majority opinions in Woodford v. Ngo, Zedner v. the US, and Arlington Central School District Board of Education v. Murphy.

Samuel Alito Net Worth: How Rich?

According to Public Integrity, a nonprofit investigative journalism organization, Samuel Alito's net worth increased from $380,000 to $1.1 million in 2011 to $2.3 million to $6.2 million in 2012.

The increase is due to "previously unreported PNC Bank accounts valued between $250,001 and $515,000, as well as two Edward Jones investment accounts," according to Public Integrity.

Oracle, Boeing, OEG Energy, and Caterpillar are among Samuel's investing portfolio companies.

Samuel also has a stake in Chevron, which might explain why he recused himself from a lawsuit involving the business last year. Samuel earned $27,000 from teaching at Duke and Penn State.
