John has given his heart and soul to his team for years, and now he needs the help of his followers. John is currently residing in a Denver assisted care facility, where he is facing a severe illness.
Before spring training, Stearns had surgery for a hiatal hernia, and his slower-than-expected recovery forced him to retire on March 7, 2014.
Furthermore, the Mets stated that his son informed them that John enjoys hearing from former fans, so they have established a page on his Facebook page where fans may write to him.
John will be happier if there are more notes. As a result, the team has asked John's admirers to write him a note, knowing that it will be greatly appreciated.

John Stearns has not only suffered from health problems and sickness now, but he also has been battling with them his whole baseball career.

On May 2, 2013, he was named the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers' temporary manager after Daren Brown replaced third-base coach Jeff Datz due to Datz's cancer diagnosis.
Stearns was named the Mariners' third base coach for the 2014 season but had to resign before the season started due to surgery. Rich Donnelly took his position.
Stearns' career-ending injuries did not keep him out of baseball for long. The Milwaukee Brewers hired him as a scout and minor league instructor in late 1986.
The injury that ended his 1980 season was the first of several that he would suffer throughout his career. Stearns began 1981 in the same place he left off the previous year: on the disabled list.

John Stearns was born on August 21, 1951, and is from Denver, Colorado, as he was born and raised there by his parents.

Stearns was picked in the 13th round of the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft by the Oakland Athletics when he was 17 years old, but he chose to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder.
Bill, his older brother, was a late-round draft pick in 1971 and played catcher in the New York Yankees system but never made it to the majors.
Stearns was a two-sport star at Colorado who excelled in baseball and football. His 16 career interceptions remain the Colorado record as of 2017. He played safety and punter for the club.
John was moved to the New York Mets at the Winter Meetings along with Del Unser and Mac Scarce from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Tug McGraw, Don Hahn, and Dave Schneck.
