According to Michael Willing, Melissa Caddick's family was alerted of her DNA match when her decomposing foot washed ashore on Bournda Beach on the state's south coast, just south of Tathra, on February 21, 2021, assistant commissioner of the New South Wales Police Force.
The foot's southern placement corresponded to the maritime police's tide and drift pattern modeling.
As of 2022, the mystery of how Melissa ended herself in the water is still being investigated.
