The darts player has competed in international tournaments since 2007, but primarily in his home country. He celebrated his first victory at the American Darts Organization (AD)).

An impressive number of over 30 titles followed in this series. Leonard was also able to win several tournaments supported by the WDF and notably victory over Paul Lim at the Dartslove in France in 2015.

Gates also achieved worldwide fame in the soft dart scene. In 2016, the pro player won the NDA Soft Tip Championship, accompanied by other victories on the Dartslive Tour.

Gates participated in a significant event of the BDO in 2017 with the World Masters, being the man from the USA taking part in the competition for the very first time. However, he did not win a set there.

Leonard narrowly missed out on the PDC World Cup qualification on the CDC tour. Later in 2019, he again competed at the US Darts Masters. The pro player won the second qualifying round in the final against John Norman Jr.

He also competed at the North American Darts Championship and reached the semi-finals, grabbing the World Cup Qualification but did not entirely successful.

In 2020 and 2021, Leonard went to Q-School to secure a tour card. Unfortunately, the American did not pass the round of 32, and eventually, Gates failed in his goal.

Later in October 2021, Leonard won the Virginia Beach Classic. Moreover, in early 2022, like in 2019 and 2020, he won the Camellia Classic with an impressive record.

Leonard was a seeded player at the WDF World Championship following his continued remarkable performance but had to lose in his first game against Steve Hine (0:3).
